This set has a lot of pieces needed to make a true "level" with Mario. The other sets are largely just special units, but have no ability to connect to the one another. That said, this is somewhat overpriced, IMO. It's got a few fun concepts to add on, but should really be priced similarly to Boo...

this set is super good, you get larry, bob-omb, and a koopa-paratroopa, you get the 30 second pipe, and don't forget the Customization blocks. i could not ask for more in this set

The starter kit is a great set and this is a better extension to this. If you had this, the starter course, and the Luigi starter course, it would make one of the best 3 set combinations ever! The obstacles are fun and I’m more of a traditional set collector but this is a great set!
